It's going to be popular!

The spellbinding film adaptation of the ten-time Tony Award-nominated musical Wicked lands in UK cinemas on Friday 22 November - and it’s already shaping up to be a sensation! Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), this highly anticipated musical stars the powerhouse duo of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, whose performances are guaranteed to be popular with audiences! But whether you're a devoted fan of Stephen Schwartz’s iconic work or completely new to the world of Oz, here's everything you need to know before heading to The Light to experience Wicked.

A gravity-defying story

At its heart, Wicked is a reimagining of Oz’s origins— a prequal to Victor Flemming’s beloved The Wizard of Oz, told through the eyes of two witches, Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande). The story begins at Shiz University, where the two women meet and form an unexpected friendship despite their differences. A young Elphaba is misunderstood by her peers, and the citizens of Oz, due to her unusually green skin, meanwhile, Glinda is the picture of privilege and popularity, though her polished exterior hides a yearning to discover her true purpose.

The Wizard and I

Their bond is tested by their shared love interest and contrasting personalities but most of all, clashing personalities, and, most importantly, the revelation of the Wonderful Wizard’s (Jeff Goldblum) corrupt regime. Their marvellous adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

A story of choices and destiny

This tale of friendship, ambition, and the complexity of good and evil flips the classic Wizard of Oz narrative on its head. Elphaba’s journey, from idealistic outcast to the so-called Wicked Witch, explores how circumstances—and those in power—can shape our destiny. The epic trailer depicts characters such as Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) influencing Elphaba to embrace some of her evil potential, while Glinda looks on and wishes she could’ve done more to stop the transformation.

Why Wicked is set become 2024's biggest film

With a devoted fan base already in place thanks to its Broadway legacy, Wicked is primed to captivate both seasoned theatre lovers and newcomers alike. Combine that with Jon M. Chu’s visionary direction, an all-star cast, and Stephen Schwartz’s unforgettable music—including hits like "Defying Gravity" and "Popular"—and you’ve got a recipe for cinematic magic.

This is not just a film; it’s an event. Make sure you don’t miss your chance to see it on the big screen!
